Description

SUMMARY

Supervises and manages the development of all facets and execution of product improvement and/or new product designs. Is responsible for assisting in regional product strategies. Designs/re-designs products to meet or exceed market needs. Work to include B.O.M., manufacturing formulas, design specifications/tolerances, and parts/fabrication drawings.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for design of completed families of system and subassemblies
  • Interprets regional design implications from customers, sales representatives, service representatives and quality technicians information collected for design improvements
  • Works with vendors in the development of designs and tolerance standards, particularly extrusion die designs.
  • Approves and submits designs of new and existing dies, vendor dies and purchased parts.
  • Directs research and/or testing for the analysis and approval of new materials or systems.
  • Recommends components for the standardization between families of window systems.
  • Recommends general standards for product testing (in-house and formal lab tests), obtaining sample plans, building prototypes, scheduling tests and communicating results
  • Recommends how fabrication requirements to Tooling and Process Engineering staff for tool design, plant layout and process flow should be communicated.
  • Recommends process for production pilot of new or reconfigured product designs, facilitates engineering involvement during full production start-up.
  • Recommends how multiple project timelines, engineering resources, costing and periodically reviews might be prioritized.
  • Recommends these changes and manages input of how these are communicated to leadership and/or cross-functional work teams.
  • Designs and recommends changes in procedures and communication formats used between departments.
  • Facilitates design review sessions and communicates project status to supervisor, co­workers and management.
  • Makes recommendations on changes for documentation, specifications and training materials.
  • Makes recommended changes in temporary deviations and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), B.O.M. and drawings standards.
  • Provides training engineering personnel on strategies for technical support of Manufacturing Department and aids in root cause analysis of build problems.
  • Is responsible for development of the design strategies for products families of high volume, financial impact and complexity.
  • Follows established procedures and approves significant expenses affecting the financial performance of the company.
  • Supports or leads strategic action plans.
  • Helps in the development of strategic plans.
  • Manages the monthly reporting of progress/ scheduling and assists in the quarterly forecasting.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to clearly develop ideas in the form of working drawings. 
  • Potential to perform comparative analysis to qualify product certifications. 
  • Ability to read and understand building codes and parts specifications.
  • Must gain familiarity with PGT manufacturing processes, material selection and product testing procedures.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related college degree) and 7 years engineering experience or 10 years window engineering experience.
  • Project management experience in a team environment experience desirable.
  • Computer skills: Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, CAD (preferably 3D or Inventor)

LANGUAGE / COMMUNICATION SKILLS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must write clearly and concisely
  • Must use courtesy and tact with internal and external customers

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Proficient in algebra, geometry and trigonometry

  • Majority of work in air-conditioned office environment located off manufacturing floor.
  • Occasional to Frequent work in manufacturing plant environment with cement flooring, seasonal temperatures/humidity, varying noise levels (Associated Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required always when on manufacturing floor).
  • Office environment involves frequent sitting, walking, and standing
  • Office environment includes occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing.
  • Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of office equipment.
  • Repetitious hand/wrist movement due to use of computer.
  • Constant oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the telephone.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to travel occasionally domestically.
